Now that I have a family, getting family pics that don't suck has just gone on my todo list.

If your family pics suck, then this is a must read article. The tip I found most helpful: getting everybody comfortable. They don't need to standup stiff and looking at the camera. Get everyone comfy and happy then press that shutter.
