The sheer genius of it all

Many of you know that I am expecting! Thank you, thank you very much! The point being that the purchase of electric and electronic devices supposed to soothe or stimulate your babies has begun. If you didn't already know, let me tell you now that these devices are all battery operated. The swing? Battery operated. The bouncy seat? Battery operated. And guess what? It's not AA or AAA batteries either. Oh No! These puppies require C or D batteries! Do you even remember what those are? Anyway.....

So I have all these new devices that require C and D batteries and, of course, I start exploring and researching rechargeable batteries. And let me just say that the technology for rechargeable C and D batteries is nowhere near as good as it is for AA and AAA. Actually, it seems like C and D rechargeables are stuck in the stone age. I can recharge a AA in 15 minutes, but it takes 5 hours to recharge a C or D battery! And its not like a C or D battery lasts longer or anything. The voltage and mAh are very close! Anyway.....

Here's where the sheer genius of it comes in! http://geeks.com sells these C enclosures for AA batteries. I can now buy the best rechargeable AA batteries on the market, put them in these plastic enclosures and plug them right into my power hungry bouncy seat! And when they die, I simply take them out, recharge them and voila, 15 min later, bouncy seat is bouncy again!

Let me tell you something: It's the small things in life that make a difference!

Atomic powered batteries lasts 20 years

Well, there's the saving the world technology, and then there's the who gives a f*** as long as its convenient technology! This definitely falls under the latter category! Atomic powered batteries that can last up to 20 years! If I were to be honest with you, I would buy these (if they were available for consumer devices) because I really really hate batteries that last for just a few hours or even a couple of days! I recharge my phone every other day for Pete's sake (sorry Pete) and I have to carry extra batteries around with me for my digital camera 'just in case'! This is one technology that can use an upgrade! Fuel Cell batteries, Where ARE YOU???? Read more (about the atomic batteries, not my rant) at Startup set to unveil tritium-powered batteries - Engadget - www.engadget.com

Youse funny Amy!

Warning: Amy Joke!

A tour bus driver drives with a bus full of seniors down a highway when a little old lady taps him on his shoulder. She offers him a handful of almonds, which he gratefully munches up. After about 15 minutes she taps him on his shoulder again and hands him another handful of almonds. She repeats this gesture about eight times. He asks her why they do not eat almonds themselves, whereupon she replies that it is not possible because of their old teeth - they are not able to chew them. "Why do you buy them then?" he asks, puzzled. The old lady answers, "We just love the chocolate coating."

Mother's Day!

Well, it was Mother's Day yesterday and so, late in the day I call up my Mom to wish her a happy Mother's Day! So we're chatting and I ask if she had wished Grandma a Happy Mother's Day yet? My Mom replies: Oh, it's not Mother's Day in Jerusalem. Only here. Mother's Day is the first day of spring, March 21st, over there.

Silence on my side.

Then: "So I forgot your Mother's Day this year?" I ask.

"No honey! It's all one and the same. How's Debbie?"

That's my Mom! But Let's think about that for a second. Mother's Day as the first day of Spring vs. Mother's Day as the first Sunday in May? Hmmmm. You know, sometimes, the old school way is just better. The first day of Spring is just so much more symbolic and poetic somehow. It represents motherhood in an elegant and subtle way (well, maybe not so subtle). It was just cool.

Anyway, to all you Moms out there, new and not so new (that's you Jennifer, Lori and Patty), I want to wish you all a Happy Mother's Day!

Xbox as your Home Media Center

I did this and I have two things to say about it! First: It is AWESOME! XBMC on my Xbox is the cat's meow! I can't stop raving about it as my friends with the rolled up eyes can attest. Second: The modding process is, well not hard exactly, more along the lines of arcane and not well documented! But doable and the payoff is oh so worth it. This article at the Washtington Post explains in more detail what fun can be had by expanding your Xbox's capabilities. Read more at Xbox Enthusiasts Uncover Its Versatility (washingtonpost.com)

What am I reading now?

I'll say this: There is better SciFi/Fantasy being written for Young Adult readers than there are for 'Adult' readers. I just finished Artemis Fowl in one sitting! A very fun read. Mr. Eoin Colfer does a great job keeping us interested. It's definitely aimed at the younger reader though and is, indeed, a very easy read. Loads of fun though. I couldn't put it down. Link to Amazon, Barnes & Noble. There is also an Artemis Fowl web site.
