Search for Jews, Jewish, or even Judaism, but don't search on Jew.

Apparently, the word "jew", more than any other variation, is used in an anti-semitic context on the web. So much so, that apparently, Google had to release an explanation as to why that particular search returns so many anti-semitic results. Read more at Google: An explanation of our search results

I (heart) Google

My love affair with Google continues. Google is now more attractive with the addition of the "movie" tag. If you don't already know, tags allow you to narrow your search. How does the movie tag work? Using the movie Sideways and the zipcode 10001 as an example, Google this (without the quotes): "movie:sideways 10001" . The result will be an aggregate rating and links to movie review plus showtimes at your local theatre. The above search will yield these results. Too cool for school! How to pitch an idea

Selling an idea, pitching an idea, convincing your boss to greenlight a project; it doesn't just happen in Hollywood. It happens everyday at work, at home, among friends (let's go here instead of there for dinner), in short, it happens more times than you think. Being able to present convincingly is a great skill to have. This is a great article on how to present an idea so it gets approved. Via UIWEB.com - read more at How to pitch an idea

dict.die.net

This is a cool dictionary site. To define any word, type this into the address bar of your browser: word.dict.die.net

For example, to define "happy", I would type this: happy.dict.die.net. Click here to see the result or do it yourself.

BTW, the die in die.net is the singular of dice and not the morbid reference.

File it under Microsoft just sucks! Apparently, huge ads in Seattle by Microsoft promoting the new MSN search, and suggesting the search "Pizza in Redmond". Google Maps

Undoubtedly the best web based map application EVER! Try it yourself at Google Maps!

You should find yourself looking at South Brooklyn (my home). Now, the really cool part, at the top of the screen, click on Local Search and enter pizza (or whatever you want) and then watch the results appear instantaneously. Choose a result and notice the bubble appear on the map with the cool drop shadow. I mean how fast is that?

Also try this:
  1. click and drag the map around
  2. use the zoom bar
  3. try directions

Dina at the Starlight Lounge

Yesterday evening, Dina performed at the Starlight Lounge. It was the second try at her monologue and the first time I had seen it. Dina, you were great! The show ended way too soon. You could have gone on for another hour.

So I get to the Starlight at about 9 pm last night were I see Dina's mom Gail. We chatted for a few minutes before they opened the back and started letting us in. I grabbed a seat towards the back counter and put my jacket down when Dina came over and asked me to work the camcorder (which is completely in Japanese). So I learn what I needed to do and I walk back to my seat and there's this guy sitting next to me. This was a little odd as there was plenty of seating yet to be had. So we chat briefly and I realize that this guy, Darryl, doesn't know Dina. Apparently he's in town on a business trip for a few days from California. It's just coincidence that he's in the Starlight about to catch Dina's show.

So this guy, Darryl, continues to chat me up and I'm beginning to think he's hitting on me. Whatever. Unfortunately, my good looks don't discriminate between men and women. Amy comes up to say hi and Darryl catches on that I'm part of a couple and we're expecting twins. Turns out, Darryl is also a twin and proceeds to give me advice on raising twins. He asks about my accent and then proceeds to tell me about when he was going to school in Wisconsin and the Arab and Egyptian friends he had, and how they had a bottle of champagne during the Camp David Summit of 1978, and so on and so on. He also tells me about his wife (?) and two kids who are 18 and 16 and how proud and happy he is.

So now I'm thinking that I was wrong about this guy trying to hit on me. On the other hand, let's consider the following: the Starlight is a gay bar, and a pretty famous one at that here in NYC. Still, that doesn't mean Darryl knew that, and maybe he just walked in off the street. But, walked in from where? As far as I know, there are no business hotels on the Lower East Side. And he was by himself, so its not like someone led him there. If you find yourself in the Lower East Side, in a gay bar, chatting up a handsome young man, I think you're looking for some (don't ask what 'some' is? I don't know! Double life anyone?). Thankfully, Dina's show started and she came on at that point. Much to Darryl's credit, he sat through most of her show and laughed very loudly and he seemed to really enjoy it.

Dina was very funny. She spoke about her life and the people in it and it was funny to see them portrayed on stage. She started by talking about her life as a writer for porn magazines and read us excerpts of her writing from said mags that had me on the floor LOL. I especially loved the lesbian bit with the vaginal farting but the cheap date with the new boxers was good too. They were all good, and Dina: You were great. She also spoke about her Dad and her Mom Gail who was in the audience as she was spoken about. It was all very funny and very poignant because you could see the love come through.

Dina, I like hot hot fudge on my sundaes too, but not so much the wet dripping sticky nuts.

Mary visits NY, EH?

Mary Tia 020505-037
My sister Mary and her friend Tia visited this weekend from Toronto. I hadn't seen my sister in a long time and it was great to see her and reconnect. We walked and talked from Delancy St., to Ground Zero. Then we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge on the way home.

Along the way, we stopped to eat in China Town. While our main dishes were only OK, the appetizers were absolutely awesome. Afterwards, we went to the Ice Cream factory on Mott St. for ginger ice cream. If you haven't tried ginger ice cream, you are missing out on one of the most amazing ice cream flavors ever invented.

Ground Zero was our next stop. Its hard to write about. We started talking about where we were and what we were doing on 9/11. We snapped a few photos and walked down the Hall of Heroes before heading towards the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge is the most beautiful bridge to walk across. It's really remarkable. We snapped a few more photos as we finished our walk home. By then, it's been about 4 hours of walking and we were getting tired. We trudged the last hour home and promptly took naps before dinner. :) Definitely a sign that we were getting old.

Emotional Water?

Jut by thinking angry thoughts, I can change the structure of water. At least according to the work of Dr. Emoto (is that name for real considering he studies the impact of emotions on the state of water?). I find this incredibly interesting. The world of quantum physics has crossed over.

"What has put Dr. Emoto at the forefront of the study of water is his proof that thoughts and feelings affect physical reality. By producing different focused intentions through written and spoken words and music and literally presenting it to the same water samples, the water appears to 'change its expression'."
Dr. Emoto's website can be found here. It's pretty cool especially the photos of the different shapes water takes when exposed to different concepts. For example, the following crystal was exposed to the word "peace":

While this one was exposed to "You make me sick":

Too cool. We are connected to the world in more ways than we can imagine.

The best foot inserts?

In my line of work, I get to stand in dress shoes all day long, and at the end of the day, my feet are killing me. I mean, amputate them just to make the pain go away kind of killing me. So I stole these foot inserts from a friend (oops, now he know who took them) and they've made all the difference. Awesome. Check them out at Profootcare.com

Blinkx.com Or Google video search revisited

On a recent post about Google Video Search, a couple of comments pointed me towards Blinkx. While it does look pretty cool, it seems to require RealPlayer to view video, and I hate RealPlayer. It also looks like they have a desktop search tool (at Blinkx.com) that you can download and use on your desktop. Has anybody out there tried it? Drop us a line if you have.
